I Shop on Queen West West, Therefore, I Am

If you’re going to eat your feelings, go with Gelato! via Vogue Italia

My day started off kind of crappy.  So to rid myself of the blues, I put on my most flowy floral, maxi skirt printed with flowers and tigers, an opulent gilded, pair of braided gladiators and my sunglasses.  Then I got into my car (Habeeba), opened my sunroof and hit Queen West West for some retail therapy.

Though I live downtown, I haven’t been on a proper stroll to pop into the cute boutiques — there are so many new ones which is fun, exciting and most of all, dangereuse (dangerous in French).

Here were some of my faves:

Zumel & Co (863 Queen St. West) – Filled with racks of colourful blouses, dresses and feminine separates, I think this would be a good place to find a lovely outfit for a daytime cocktail or a unique piece for your work wardrobe.

Cabaret (672 Queen St. West) – This is an oldie but a goodie.  A family owned vintage shop specializing in 1920-1970’s clothing.  Nothing cheers me up like going into the basement of a vintage store, trying on random retro outfits and digging for hidden treasure.  Nothing.  I got my besties’ bday present there – an elaborate, Art Deco black beaded headdress which they died over.  Plus, the shopgirls were sooo nice and loved my gypsy jetset outfit. PS. I love you.

Wildfox Couture Pop-Up Shop (711 Queen St. West) – Vintage inspired casual wear for dreamers.  Based out of LA, this brand is all about distressed terry cloths, soft slub t-shirts, relaxed sweaters and Malibu-inspired beachwear.  A fave brand of celebs this pop-up will be here at least until the end of Summer.  I could not resist the cute quotient of a Koala pullover because obviously, koala is my power animal.

You Don’t Say? The D’Orsay Flat

A kaleidoscope of D'Orsay flats from Jenni Kayne

A kaleidoscope of D’Orsay flats from Jenni Kayne

You know how you see women wearing running shoes en route to work, then changing to high heels?  Promise me, you’ll never be that woman.  God invented ballet flats for a reason.  And this season, the D’Orsay flat is hitting the mainstream.

Bonjour sexy! D'Orsay High Heel in a suede colour block

Bonjour sexy! D’Orsay High Heel in a suede colour block

This style of shoe is named after Count Alfred d’Orsay, a 19th Century gentleman about town and an artist friend of Lord Byron. The cut-out sides were introduced to accommodate wider feet but this style has been widely adopted in women’s footwear.  Made with a vamp that curves around closely to the foot, exposing the instep (ahem shoe porn). While we see this a lot in high heels, last season Jenni Kayne‘s version of the D’Orsay flat has made this one beloved look to watch!

“Are you happy to see me, or are those printed pants?”  haha. I thought that was pretty clever.  Darlings, the fashionistah adventuress among you, let’s huddle close to stave off these mean winter blues.  Even though it’s supposedly Spring, the double digit sub zero weather would have us believe otherwise.  While I can’t wear any of my fab Spring/Summer finds just yet, I am amassing a secret arsenal of veryx3 fun outfits to sport galavanting whilst vintage shopping, having drinks al fresco or at a friends’ barbecue.

One of my favourite up and coming trends for Spring is the printed pant.  This Spring promises to be bright and colourful with a throwback to retro silhouettes.  Forget that we just had a blizzard mid-March.  Are you excited yet?  Can your wardrobe handle it?

Jared Leto’s So-Called Hair

Jared Leto winning his Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club. He got his looks from his mama.

Besides daisies, plaid and 90’s nostalgia becoming all the rage, everyone is all about Jared Leto and his lustrous manlocks.  For those of us who are  old young enough to remember, his claim to fame was starring as Jordan Catalano on my So-Called Life.  He was the quintessential aloof pretty boy leaning on walls, distracted, being reallyx3 attractive from all angles, object of Angela Chase’s unrequited love and the bad boy of our collective dreams.  He had a few years where he pursued his music with 30 Seconds to Mars and we all forgot what a sexy babe he is.

But he’s been drinking the blood of innocents and that’s what you look like when you’ve made a pact with Beelzebub.  Some of his memorable looks today and yesterday.  Enjoy!

Not long ago, Jared had a pink Mohawk. Here he is performing in Wales with 30 Second to Mars.

So Very French

Carrie Bradshaw Paris

Remember the Paris episode where Carrie took a face plant in Dior? Then she was mortified and bought the entire store. Hrmm…unintentional poetry.

Little French cafés are so mignon (cute, dainty), non? Today, me and A went for petit déjeuner (breakfast) at the most darling patisserie housed in a Victoria row house.  The food was deliciously French and so were the waiters.  It’s the kind of place where they serve you lattes with the foam shaped in a heart.  And where you say no béchamel and you end up saying yes to brioche and crepes with nutella.  I can’t divulge its name for fear of it becoming too popular.  Sorry darlings.  Some secrets have to stay in my hair.  We had a very French afternoon punctuated by flirty girlish giggling.  Those are the days my friend!

Catherine Deneuve

The epitome of chic: the one, the only Catherine Deneuve

If you don’t know much about my French muse Catherine Deneuve, I insist you really must read on Parisian Bombshell Chic: Catherine DeneuveTrust.

Croque Madame

Perhaps you will order yourself a Croque Madame – a grilled ham and cheese with béchamel topped with a fried or poached egg

C by Bloomingdales beret

It’s rather chilly out, non? Tilt your C by Bloomingdales beret ever so slightly. Passerbys will admire your air of “je ne sais quoi”

Eiffel Tower at Night

Bonsoir and bonne chance young lovers! The Eiffel Tower lit up at night *le sigh*
