The Pilgrimage with Paul Coelho

The Pilgrimage is based on true events. Do you believe?

Similar to the rest of the world (Bill Clinton, Oprah, Julia Roberts, countless others +/- famous), I love The Alchemist.  Paul Coelho, the Brazilian writer has a sage voice whose narratives often explore the themes of love, purpose and humanity.  His books have been translated in every language selling millions of copies to avid readers.

The Pilgrimage was recommended by a friend and it documents Coelho’s own pilgrimage from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, (a route traversed on foot by pilgrims from the turn of the century) to visit the holy remains of Saint James.  There are three other parallel pilgrim routes that many travelled within their lifetime to show their devotion to their faith.  The latter is meant to be a companion piece which reveals the source of inspiration for The Alchemist.  The plot involves Coelho’s journey, his tests of faith, intuition and courage and a struggle to attain a treasure which has deep personal meaning.  In his writing, people often comment on the transformative nature of his books, especially for the reader who seeks deeper understanding to the questions of one’s life and reflection on their own personal journey.

My favourite things: Paulo working a great tan in a black polo in front of gajillions of books. Brains & beauty!

Whenever I am feeling down, I reach for The Alchemist.

And on another positive musical note…

For your listening pleasure, a wonderful cover song by up and coming songstress Lissie, of Kid Cudi’s ‘Pursuit of Happiness.’  Obviously, the original by Kid Cudi is amazing with MGMT and Ratatat but Lissie’s version is very rebellious and ‘oh yeah, I’ll show you world!”  It’s my current anthem, especially for days when I’m feeling ‘woe-woe-woe is me.’  I have been listening to this track on repeat because it has a great melody, killer vocals and an optimistic, heartfelt message.  I promise, it will put you in a positive state of mind.
