Dressing for Transitional

Curse the day that I begin to see the foliage change from emerald greens to harvest hues.  As the darkness approaches sooner and the summer days slightly cool, it’s only a short time before we declare it Fall.  It feels as though Summer began only yesterday.  Oh, the thought.  I could sob a million tears.  My only comfort is Fall Fashion, championed by the appearance of the September issues.

August is a wild-card month, at times too sweltering to think about warmer clothes when all we want to do is peel off and wear next to nothing.  But it’s on the tip of the season.  It begs the questions:  Should we shame spiral and buy everything on Sale?  Or save our pennies to invest in a few new pieces to rejuvenate our wardrobes?

Here are my thoughts on successfully transitionning from one season to the next…

How delicious is this Velvet jersey t-shirt from Anthropologie? I love its oatmeal muted tones and major ruffles.

Layer Me Softly – It is completely acceptable to invest in many basic layering pieces.  Brightly hued tank tops, sweet jersey t-shirts, floral chiffon blouses, Henleys, thinly knit cardigans or cardiwraps.  You will wear these to death.  As the climate dips, you can easily layer these various textures and patterns.  The key to layering is to avoid looking sloppy.  Create shape by belting or as a general rule of thumb, if you are going to go flowy on top, go fitted on the bottom (and vice versa).

Every girl needs a versatile jacket. This Aqua 3/4 sleeve blazer would look great with jeans, dress pants, a skirt, a dress, etc, etc...

Blazer Fetish – When you start to love blazers, you just can’t help yourself.  It can be addiction forming.  An outift that was just right in the summer, can be even better by simply adding the right jacket.  My favourites are fitted, nipped at the waist with a princess sleeve and 3/4 sleeve.  Variations such as Coco Chanel-esque tweeds are fun to dress up jeans.  Elizabeth & James are showing some blazers with strong shoulders (think Dynasty, less sequins).  Try on as many blazers as humanly possible to find the styles and shapes that suit you best.

The Right Tight – With a number of lovely skirt silhouettes this season, from the layered tulles, to the body-con and full circles, it would be a downright pity to leave them unloved until next summer.  Paired with opaque tights in a basic black or a bright and some boots, makes the look seasonally appropriate.  For the skinny-legged fashionistah adventuress, there are bold florals, geometrics and woven laces.  No regrets!

Grey is the new black. Looks great on your nails too. Give it a whirl!
