Hottt Trend Alert: The Bustier
An intriguing title, non? Lingerie as outerwear. It takes a certain confidence to pull it off. I mean, you are wearing your underwear (almost) in public. Kind of thrilling and exhibitionist with a dash of burlesque.
The bustier is not for everyone but it is a trend that we will definitely be seeing more of this holiday and next spring. It’s a fun party look best suited for evening cocktails and soirees. The runways were flooded with them and while some versions are more subdued than overtly sexy, let’s focus on the attention grabbers. I particularly love the styles in shades of black or nude (take my advice: say no to red). Sweetheart necklines emphasize your bust while corsetted versions will pinch your waist, creating a lovely hourglass. For a more demeure look, why not try wearing a bustier layered with a sheer top? It’s a provocative look with zero exposure.
My favourite bustier was Betsey Johnson in a cranberry colour and a faint pinstripe. It was featured in Sassy magazine, in a spread for ‘grunge’ layered with a long flowery dress and lace-up booties. Looking back, I was such a fashion risk-taker (but this was the time of the Club Kids and people dressed much more outrageous). These are experiments that you should be trying out in your 20’s because a) you’ve got the bod and b) you’re a fun-loving PYT (pretty young thing) See/ Tay-Tay Momsen’s ‘rocker phase.’ She will be able to transition through it by blaming it on her youth.
And if you’re still not convinced, take a walk down memory lane. The most famous of bustiers belongs to Madge. Madonna – Express Yourself
